What is the role of psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems. Psychiatrists will determine whether the illness is caused by mental health or another physical condition, often looking to rule out another medical cause of the symptoms before a diagnosis.

What is the role of a counsellor?

A professional counsellor is a trained individual who is able to use a different range of counselling approaches with their clients. They focus on understanding your vision of well-being, the concerns that are interfering with your well-being, the efforts you've made in overcoming those concerns and in what other way they can help you resolve the issues.

How is one referred to psychiatrist?

One needs to visit counselling centre and meet the counsellor. The counsellor would do an assessment and then schedule an appointment with the psychiatrist based on the need and severity of the problem.

The first appointment with a psychiatrist lasts about approximately 30 minutes and focuses on understanding your distress and presenting complaints. The psychiatrist would do a thorough evaluation of your problems and provide medication, if necessary.
